Holidays at the Greek Mountains


Greece is branded as a major summer holidays destination with thousands of beautiful islands and long sandy beaches. But it is not only that. Is also a country consists of more than 300 high mountains. The majority of Greek islands are in fact the peaks of the mountain landmass of Aegis, which was once the link between mainland Greece and Asia Minor. The major mountains are Pindos Mountains extending through central Greece into the Peloponnese and Crete.

Olympus (in Macedonia region) is the most famous Greek mountain as it was the home of the Gods in Greek mythology. It is also the highest mountain in the country, rising at 2,917 m.

Generally in Greece, 40 mountains reach elevations of over 2,000 m.

The Greek mountains are known for their diversity, landscapes of surprising natural beauty. Unique forests cover most of them, many of which rank among the oldest natural wooded lands in Europe. Due to the astonishingly rich flora and fauna they support, many of these environments have been designated as Greece's National Parks and are protected as such by the Greek state.
